Surface flux transport modeling for solar cycles 15–21: effects of cycle-dependent tilt angles of sunspot groups

چکیده
We model the surface magnetic field and open flux of the Sun from 1913 to 1986 using a surface flux transport model, which includes the observed cycleto-cycle variation of sunspot group tilts. The model reproduces the empirically derived time evolution of the solar open magnetic flux, and the reversal times of the polar fields. We find that both the polar field and the axial dipole moment resulting from this model around cycle minimum correlate with the strength of the following cycle.

Coronal and heliospheric magnetic flux circulation and its relation to open solar flux evolution
Solar cycle 24 is notable for three features that can be found in previous cycles but which have been unusually prominent: (1) sunspot activity was considerably greater in the northern/southern hemisphere during the rising/declining phase; (2) accumulation of open solar flux (OSF) during the rising phase was modest, but rapid in the early declining phase; (3) the heliospheric current sheet (HCS...
متن کاملSolar cycle prediction using precursors and flux transport models
We study the origin of the predictive skill of some methods to forecast the strength of solar activity cycles. A simple flux transport model for the az-imuthally averaged radial magnetic field at the solar surface is used, which contains a source term describing the emergence of new flux based on observational sunspot data. We consider the magnetic flux diffusing over the equator as a pre-dicto...
متن کاملModeling the Sun’s Magnetic Field and Irradiance since 1713
We use a flux transport model to simulate the evolution of the Sun’s total and open magnetic flux over the last 26 solar cycles (1713–1996). Polar field reversals are maintained by varying the meridional flow speed between 11 and 20 m s , with the poleward-directed surface flow being slower during low-amplitude cycles. If the strengths of the active regions are fixed but their numbers are taken...
متن کاملTwenty-three cycles of changing open solar magnetic flux
[1] This paper presents a comparison of various estimates of the open solar flux, deduced from measurements of the interplanetary magnetic field, from the aa geomagnetic index and from photospheric magnetic field observations. The first two of these estimates are made using the Ulysses discovery that the radial heliospheric field is approximately independent of heliographic latitude, the third ...
متن کاملA robust correlation between growth rate and amplitude of solar cycles: consequences for prediction methods
We consider the statistical relationship between the growth rate of activity in the early phase of a solar cycle with its subsequent amplitude on the basis of four datasets of global activity indices (Wolf sunspot number, group sunspot number, sunspot area, and 10.7-cm radio flux). In all cases, a significant correlation is found: stronger cycles tend to rise faster. Owing to the overlapping of...
